Please share your views on the current automotive market in India?
Automotive markets worldwide are in the midst of a storm of radical change which is driving the industry , as a whole, in a direction that no one would have anticipated. Automated driving, connected vehicles, shared mobility, and electrification— All these key industry trends are leading to widespread changes in, for example, business models of automotive manufacturers, consumers' preference for sharing rather than owning vehicles, the concept of mobility, and collaborations between competitors.
The Indian automotive market is no exception. We are now seeing an increase in average income drive middle-class consumers more towards value-added commodities, and the government is imposing stricter regulations to ensure that products are safe and environmentally sustainable. Such factors both within and outside the industry have an impact on the ever-changing automotive market in India.
Looking forward, we see changes in the market as strategic opportunities to promote new products featuring cutting-edge technology which will be increasingly welcomed by consumers. Specifically, we are focusing on core products including our sunroofs, powered rear hatches, park assist systems, and variable pumps. We make the most of the Aisin group brand, recognized for engineering excellence stemming from the spirit of monozukuri, to strategically market high-performance automotive products packed with features. One of our aims is to keep working to contribute to the evolution of our motorized society while enhancing our competitive edge.
Based on Indian automotive market trends, which products are on the top of your marketing list?
Regulations enforced by the government encourage changes in the market, one example is a newly implemented regulation to ensure passenger safety.
The rise in the number of road accidents is forcing India to take road safety seriously. In many crashes, drivers and front-seat passengers are killed or severely injured because they aren’t wearing seatbelts. In a move towards making cars safer, the Union Road Transport Ministry approved a timeline for implementing a new set of rules, and all cars manufactured after July 1st, 2019 will have to be equipped with a specific set of safety features. We see this as a great opportunity to boost sales of our seat occupancy sensor* and have launched a special campaign. The challenge for us is that many customers expect the sensors to be locally produced, and to meet this requirement, the product has to be rushed into production, leaving little time for design and development.
* A sensor that detects whether a passenger is sitting in the seat, and activates a warning if a seatbelt has not been engaged.
So, what tactics will you employ to conquer the challenge?
All business begins with a contract. If you are in production or procurement, you need to follow a well-planned roadmap that not only takes account of recent market conditions but also covers market forecasts looking 5 or even 10 years into the future in order to select the right suppliers to achieve your goals. That makes it essential for us to gather information on both macroeconomic and customer trends and to ensure the information is shared swiftly and effectively across internal divisions.
I am determined to keep doing my best to realize my dream of our products making meaningful contributions toward a better motorized society in India.
Tell us about your city, Rohtak.
Certainly. Rohtak lies 82 kilometers northwest of Delhi, the capital of India. That's about two hours by car. Rohtak has a lot of renowned national colleges and institutes, making it one of the biggest educational hubs in the country. The city is also home to many famous sportspersons including wrestlers and boxers.
Some neighboring tourist destinations and historical monuments I would recommend are: Red Fort (Red Castle), Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, and India Gate. All of these are located about 80 km southeast of Rohtak. World-famous ivory-white marble mausoleum, the Taj Mahal is just 240 km southeast of this city.
What do you do for fun?
I go to forests and mountains on holidays. Recently, my friends and I went to Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. We weren’t lucky enough to spot a tiger, but the lush of the well-forested area is packed with wildlife, and we had the pleasure of seeing deer, wild boar, and colorful roosters.
I'm also a foodie. I travel all over to find and enjoy various local specialties.
