A successful ultra-high-speed startup of 20 kW class High Temperature Superconducting Induction/Synchronous Motor

17th April, 2025

IMRA Japan Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Kyoto University (Professor Taketsune Nakamura, Department of Electrical Engineering), has been promoting the development of superconducting motors (High Temperature Superconducting Induction / Synchronous Motor (HTS-ISM)). Recently, verification using a 20 kW-class HTS-ISM, prototyped in collaboration with Kyoto University, has confirmed extremely stable ultra-high-speed starting performance. The development of superconducting motors has mainly focused on enhancement of output power. The operational behavior during acceleration and deceleration of superconducting motor barely studied. This demonstrates that the HTS-ISM can respond to rapid speed changes and represents a significant achievement towards establishing future operational control methods using superconducting motors.
